Why we give up and settle
The reason that we give up on important things in our lives usually center around three things: uncertainty, difficulty, and fear (3 distinct and interconnected criteria) . They are the underlying cause of giving up and losing hope in our goal: Uncertainly for how much time it will take for the outcome; the amount of difficulty involved ( are you over your head?); and fear of failure. We want to avoid feeling incapable, less than, or even worthless so we half-ass things to use as an excuse for why we failed (“I failed because I didn’t really try”).
Holding onto that "one last try" makes all the difference
That “one last try” is often the difference between success and failure. Perseverance, patience and hard work is a necessary component in getting many of the valuable things you want to have in your life, whether it’s a relationship or a new job. You must keep trying because that "one last try" could be you're winning ticket.
Giving up takes away from your life more than you think
I don’t believe that when it comes to the important areas of your life, you should ever settle for less. Because when you do, there’s more that you lose than the immediate thing that you were going for. You lose a portion of your confidence,a piece of your passion, hope, and the time that you invested. On top of that, you lose a sense of meaning in your life. It's draining and disappointing. Just as we consider the consequences of failure, we must also consider the consequences of not trying.
You will succeed if you keep trying
So if you want a better job, go for it! Don’t give up. If you want a better relationship with your family, keep trying different ways. Don’t settle for the bitter interactions and occasional phone calls. If you want to be more positive, keep working on yourself. The major things you want in your life probably won’t come easy, but they will be worth it.
